What Type of Glove Do I Need – Latex, Nitrile or Vinyl?

When deciding on a disposable glove, the first thing you need to consider is how much protection you need for the task at hand.

How Should Exam Gloves Fit?

How Do I Properly Remove Exam Gloves?

According to the CDC, there are a few important steps to follow when removing exam gloves to prevent contamination or contact with dangerous germs/pathogens on the exterior of the gloves. To protect yourself, the CDC recommends following these steps when removing gloves:

Step 1: With both gloved hands, grab the outside of one clove at the top of the wrist but be careful not to touch bare skin.

Step 2: Peel off the first glove, peeling away from your body from wrist to fingertips turning the glove inside out.

Step 3: Hold the glove you just removed in your gloved hand

Step 4: Using your ungloved hand, peel off the second glove by inserting your fingers inside the glove at the top of the wrist.

Step 5: Turn the second glove inside out while tilting it away from your body, leaving the first glove inside the second.

Step 6: Safely dispose of gloves and never re-use disposable gloves.

Step 7: Immediately after removal, wash and dry hands thoroughly before touching any objects or surfaces.

Do Exam Gloves Expire?

Disposable gloves have a shelf life which depends on how they are stored and what materials were used to manufacture them. Natural latex gloves have a shelf life of approximately 3 years, while Nitrile, Hycar, PVC, Urethane, PVA, EVOH, polyethylene and other synthetic coated gloves offer a 5 year shelf life.

These expiration dates are based on gloves that are properly stored. Manufacturer shelf life guidelines are not applicable if product package seal is broken or gloves have been removed from their original packaging or been exposed to moisture. The shelf-life is also reduced if gloves are stored in an area that is above 90 degrees or if they are exposed to ozone or ultraviolet light for extended time periods. Natural rubber gloves are especially vulnerable to degradation from UV light and ozone generated by motors or electrical equipment.

In order to maximize the shelf life of disposable gloves, they should be stored in a cool, dark environment and shielded from ozone and UV lights as well as steam pipes, radiators and other heat sources.

Generally speaking, if gloves look normal and can stretch and pulled onto the hands without breaking or tearing, they should be able to provide the level of protection promised. Any gloves that have deteriorated will show signs of that deterioration by tearing easily or cracking when stretched.
